Sedation Dentistry FAQs

Here you can find answers to our most commonly asked questions. If you have any further questions or can’t find the answer you’re looking for, please contact us and we’ll make sure you get the information you need to make a confident decision about your dental health!

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes, sedation dentistry is very safe when performed by a trained and experienced oral surgeon. Dr. Hildebrand will evaluate your health history and tailor the sedation method to ensure safety throughout the procedure.

Will I be asleep during the procedure?

It depends on the level of sedation chosen. With nitrous oxide or oral sedation, you will be awake but deeply relaxed. With IV sedation or general anesthesia, you may be in a sleep-like state or fully asleep.

How long do the effects of sedation last?

The effects of sedation vary by method. Nitrous oxide wears off quickly, while oral sedation and IV sedation may take a few hours to wear off. General anesthesia may take several hours before you feel fully alert.

Can I drive myself home after sedation?

If you receive oral sedation, IV sedation, or general anesthesia, you will need someone to drive you home as the effects may impair your ability to drive. Nitrous oxide allows for immediate recovery, and you may be able to drive after the procedure.
